Publication: The Outcrop, July 2007, p. 14
The RMAG Foundation presented its 2007 Graduate Student Scholarships on May 4 at the Friday luncheon. Foundation chairman Matt Silverman said, “We were thrilled to have such outstanding candidates again this year and pleased to be able to recognize these grad students with scholarships to further their careers in the geological sciences.”
Awards in the amount of $2500 each were presented by Bob Sellers to the Norman H. Foster Scholarship winners, Brandon Binford of the University of Colorado, Boulder; and Jennifer Aschoff of the University of Texas, Austin.
Scholarships each in the amount of $2000, were made to Rob Amerman at the Colorado School of Mines (the RMAG Mines Scholarship); Jason Adams at the University of Colorado (the Dudley and Marion Bolyard Scholarship); and to Sara Smaltz at Colorado State University.
For the first time, the Foundation also made awards of the Veterans Memorial Scholarship. This was created in 2006 to recognize all of RMAG’s veterans and to support graduate studies in geology, with a preference for vets. Gifts in memory of Earl Griffith, Bud Ogle, Leigh Barksdale and others were instrumental in establishing this fund.
The $2000 Veterans Memorial Scholarship winners were Daniel Horton, a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan and Jack Grow, a Master’s candidate at the University of New Mexico.
Binford, Aschoff, Amerman, Adams and Smaltz were all present to receive their awards in person. Also present were Janet Foster and Kim Foster Garneau, who helped present the Foster Scholarships.
Tax-deductible contributions to the Foundation to support these scholarships in the future may be designated for the Foster, Veterans, CU (Bolyard), Mines and CSU scholarships and sent to:
