On Friday, March 6th RMAG and the DAPL held the annual GeoLandSki with a day trip to Vail. The two full buses of Geologists and Landmen left bright and early from Heritage Square. Plenty of donuts, bagels, coffee, etc. were on hand as well as some ethanol based coffee additives.
The weather at Vail was somewhat mixed but starting mid-morning the sun occasionally broke through. Despite somewhat crusty snow conditions the group hit the mountain hard and seemed to have a good day on the slopes. Tommy Thompson did not go up the mountain but instead did 5 K’s around the golf course on his museum quality cross country skis.
Après Ski began at 3:00 at Manor Vail with some great food and libations. The room was well sized for our group and everyone could hear what was going on. Some great door prizes were given out to the attendees. At 5:30 we loaded back onto the buses for the return trip with the party continuing. Despite some unruly behavior on the back of the bus the return trip seemed to go very quickly. Perhaps someone had too good a time on the trip as my ski poles disappeared from the bus. If someone comes up with a pair of black and aluminum Scott poles give me a call.
This year’s committee members were Chris Gough and Larry Bennett of the RMAG and Birgit Roesink and Steve Johnson from the DAPL. Thank you for putting together such a great trip. Chris Gough deserves special thanks for his many years of running the annual ski trip through thick and thin.
For those who have never gone on the GeoLandSki you are missing a great day of fun and camaraderie and one of the highlights of the RMAG calendar.
