John Robinson and Keith Shanley conducted an excellent short course on the tight gas fluvial reservoirs of the Lance Formation in the Green River Basin (GRB), Wyoming, on June 2. The course was very well received by 63 geoscientists and engineers and was held at the USGS Federal Center Core Warehouse. Eight groups of presenters provided a multi-faceted program that included a technical paper, a formal presentation, and a poster session from each group.

The morning presentation session consisted of eight technical papers, many of which described recent work not yet published. Topics included regional stratigraphy, reservoir characterization, geophysical imaging of reservoir heterogeneity, petrophysics, outcrop studies, and stimulation methodologies. The wide scope of the papers provided a truly integrated view of the Lance Formation.

A lunch-hour highlight was a tour of the USGS Ice Core Facility. During the informal afternoon session the presenters were available for discussion while participants moved through the poster sessions and observed several key cores from Jonah and Pinedale fields. The question of how to identify pay was a hot topic, with more debate than consensus. Though some restrictions had been placed on data and interpretations that could be presented (by companies that owned the data), attendees benefited from being able to observe key cores and draw their own conclusions.

Course participants were provided with the eight technical papers, including numerous figures, outcrop photos, core descriptions, core photos and micrographs. Overall the course was exceptionally well organized and presented, and participants came away with an excellent understanding of the characteristics of, and remaining questions about, the Lance Formation in the GRB.
