The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists presents its award for Distinguished Public Service to the Earth Sciences to Dr. Stephen A. Sonnenberg in recognition of his dedicated commitment to earth science and serving the citizens of Colorado.

Steve is a petroleum geologist and Team Lead for the North Piceance Basin Group at EnCana Energy Resources. He earned BS and MS degrees in Geology from Texas A&M University and a PhD in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines.

In November 1997, former governor Roy Romer appointed Dr. Sonnenberg to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to satisfy the statutory requirement of having substantial education and experience in the oil and gas industry. The Commission is responsible for promoting the development of natural resources in a manner that protects public health, safety, welfare, and the environment. Steve has brought valuable insight and geologic expertise to the issues facing the Commission during his tenure, and has served in the leadership role as Commission Chair from July 1999 until his resignation in July 2003.

Although Steve has been active in numerous professional endeavors throughout his career, it is in recognition of his commitment and dedication to serving the citizens of Colorado through his participation on the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission that the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists presents Dr. Stephen A. Sonnenberg its award for Distinguished Public Service to the Earth Sciences.
