Piceance Basin Field Symposium

Title: Piceance Basin Field Symposium, October 4 – 6, 2003, Glenwood Springs, Colorado
Publication: The Outcrop, August 2003, p. 14

Field Trip Leaders: Steve Cumella, Williams Production, and Rex Cole, Mesa State College

Posters and Talks: Terri Olson, Tom Brown Inc., and David Uhl, EnCana Oil & Gas

The Symposium will be in the field on Saturday and Monday and at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Glenwood Springs on Sunday for posters, talks, and a field trip to Fairy Cave and Glenwood Caverns.

The field trip will focus primarily on Mesaverde Group outcrops in the southern part of the basin between Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction, Colorado. On the first day the group will observe excellent exposures of the Mesaverde in Coal and Main canyons, examining primarily the lower and middle Williams Fork Formation, the non-marine portion of the Mesaverde above the Rollins. On Monday, we will start the day observing outcrops of thickly bedded fluvial deposits of the middle to upper part of the Williams Fork along Plateau Creek. Then the group will look at the Ohio Creek Member of the uppermost Williams Fork and the contact with the overlying Wasatch Formation. The next stop will be in Rulison Field near Rifle. The Williams Fork Formation is a major producer of natural gas in Rulison, Grand Valley, Parachute, and Mamm Creek fields. The geology and completion practices in these fields will be discussed. The last stop will be at Rifle Gap, where steeply dipping outcrops of the Mesaverde Group are exposed along the Grand Hogback.

At the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Glenwood Springs on Sunday, a series of posters and talks on various aspects of the geology and petroleum potential of the Piceance Basin will be presented to supplement the fieldtrip. In mid-afternoon, the gondola will take participants to Fairy Cave and Glenwood Caverns for a geologic tour lead by Harvey Duchene and Fred Luizer. Sunday evening we will relax with refreshments at the Icebreaker in the Ramada Inn Conference Center.
