2004 – Distinguished Service to RMAG Award

Award: Distinguished Service to RMAG Award 2004

Awardee: Harold (Hal) Kellogg

Publication: The Outcrop, November 2004, p. 12

The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists is pleased to bestow Hal Kellogg with its Distinguished Service to RMAG Award. Honorary Membership to RMAG is considered the penultimate award that RMAG may give a member. Although it is somewhat unconventional to follow Honorary Membership with any other award, in Hal’s case further recognition is especially warranted. Perhaps Hal’s ongoing service to the RMAG Professional Awards Committee is the reason why he has not received this award long ago; but it has been earned several times over.

Hal joined RMAG in 1968. He served as Counselor to RMAG in the late 1980s and as President-Elect and President in 1992 and 1993, respectively. During his presidency, he was instrumental in bringing RMAG into the computer age, converting the membership database to a PC-based system, the direct descendent of which is still in operation today. Hal has served on the Education Committee and is continuing his 10 years of service on the Professional Awards Committee. RMAG bestowed Hal with Honorary Membership in 1995.

After being awarded Honorary Membership, Hal became a stalwart, behind-the-scenes pillar of RMAG activity. Hal has served on the Membership Committee for many years, and for the past 14 years has been the main force behind creating the joint RMAG and Denver Geophysical Society (DGS) membership directory (7 issues). This has been a monumental task but the fact that he has done it for so long is clear evidence of his qualification for this award. On behalf of RMAG, Hal acquired the rights to use drawings by Andy Alpha, which among other uses, have graced the covers of the RMAG/DGS membership directory since the mid-1990s.

Hal single-handedly compiled and wrote the 1997 Mountain Geologist article (vol. 34 no.4, pp. 121-168) that summarizes RMAG’s activities for its first 75 years. This article is a must-read for anyone seeking historical information about RMAG. Hal was a member of the RMAG Foundation Board from 1997-2004, serving as Chairman for much of that time.

Hal’s willingness to tackle such daunting tasks makes him an exceptionally deserving recipient of the Distinguished Service to RMAG Award.
