Publication: The Outcrop, November 2004, p. 13
The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists presents its award for Distinguished Public Service to the Earth Sciences to Rex Monahan in recognition of his dedicated commitment to the community, made possible by his success as a professional earth scientist.
Rex is an independent oil and gas producer with operations in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and Utah. He has over 50 years of experience in the petroleum industry, starting out as a roughneck in western Nebraska and then moving to Sterling, Colorado, where he began creating prospects, acquiring leases and putting deals together to drill wells. Rex earned Bachelors degrees in both Psychology and Geology from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and an MBA from Regis College in Denver.
Rex credits the petroleum industry with providing numerous opportunities to him and his family, and as a result he is extremely dedicated to giving back to the community. For many years he has provided scholarships to dozens of students to attend college in Colorado and Nebraska. Rex provides financial aid annually to the following: Colorado School of Mines, University of Nebraska, Regis University, Morgan Community College, Northeastern Junior College, Trinidad State Junior College, Friends of Nursing, and Logan County Literacy Coalition. For 10 years prior to state funding being provided, Rex gave money to over 300 Colorado State Prison inmates so that they could earn General Equivalent Diplomas. Locally, he maintains emergency funds for indigent people at six churches, a hospital, and a supermarket in Sterling. In addition to financial support, Rex provides expertise to several boards on which he serves, focusing primarily on his commitment to education. Rex rounds out his impressive legacy of community service by visiting two nursing homes in his hometown six days a week.
The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists is pleased to present Rex Monahan with its award for Distinguished Public Service to the Earth Sciences.
