Award: Distinguished Service to RMAG, 2005
Awardee: Stephen M. Strachan
Publication: The Outcrop, November 2005, p. 21
It is with great pleasure and esteem that The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists honors Stephen M. Strachan with its Distinguished Service to RMAG Award.
Steve earned a BA in Geology from Occidental College in 1976 and started his career as a petroleum geologist with Texaco in New Orleans. Texaco transferred him to Denver in 1980. The following year Steve joined South Louisiana Production Company, which became Celeron Oil and Gas Company. In 1987 he left Celeron and formed his own company, Strachan Exploration, Inc. and has been an active operator in the Piceance and northern Green River basins since that time.
Shortly after Steve was transferred to Denver he joined the RMAG. He was RMAG 2nd Vice-President in 1988, and has been a candidate for RMAG office at other times. It is Steve’s ten years of service as a Trustee of the RMAG Foundation that is the primary reason that he is being honored. During his tenure he was noted for his consistent and important guidance in the many financial and investment decisions that came before the Trustees between 1995 and 2005. During this time the portfolio quadrupled, and the earnings were invested in the lives of others. This was done through scholarships and awards to undergraduate and graduate geology students in a widespread number of colleges and universities.
This award also acknowledges his contributions to the Denver Earth Resources Library that has served RM.AG members so well for almost twenty years. In the uncertainty of the early days when the Library was struggling to get on its feet, Steve, through his family’s Gibbet Hill Foundation, gave the Library some of its initial, important and unsolicited financial support as well as serving on the Board of the library. This support continues today.
In recognition of his long standing support, generosity, wise council and leadership as a member of the Trustees of the RMAG Foundation, and as a supporter of the Denver Earth Resources Library, the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists honors Stephen M. Strachan with its Distinguished Service to RMAG Award.
