“And the winner is, Utah State!” This year’s Rocky Mountain Section AAPG Imperial Barrel Award competition was a huge success with a first time team being sent to Houston for the International Finals. Colorado School of Mines came in second, University of Nevada Las Vegas followed in third, and the judges gave BYU Idaho an honorable mention for being the only all undergraduate team. Additional competing teams included the University of Wyoming, Boise State University, and New Mexico Tech. The incredible dedication and effort shown by all the students was commented on repeatedly in the judges’ awards ceremony.
The competition held at the University of Colorado on March 19th, was judged by Randy Ray, Chet Paris, John Klein, Kevin Morrato, Matt Silverman, and James Evans. The RMAG sponsored the event financially and provided the RMAG library DVD to the top two teams. The RMAG also provided a discounted rate on additional DVDs making it possible for the committee to provide copies to each participating student. The committee would like to extend thanks to the RMAG BOD for their donation.
Kim Parsons, the section chairperson has successfully developed the program from only two schools competing the first year to seven just two years later. The program is continuing to grow and if you want your Alma Matter to compete, please check out the website http://www.aapg.org/iba/aboutIBA.cfm.
